CIEFL Hyderabad Courses

English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was earlier known as Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL). In order to enhance he standards of the teaching of English and foreign languages in the India, the  Central Government established the CIEFL. The University was established in the year 1958. It is recognized and funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The University offers M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in numerous disciplines such as, Linguistics, Literature, Cultural Studies, European Studies and Language Studies.

Undergraduate Courses
  • B.A . (Hons) English

    This new course offers any student who has passed his Intermediate (10 plus 2) examination an opportunity to specialize in English studies for 3 years working towards a B.A (Hons) degree.

    Each academic year will consist of two semesters, and in each semester you will be registering for four courses. In all, during your three years with us, you will be taking 24 courses.

    Admission to this course is based on the entrance test.

  • B.A (Hons) in Mass Communication and Journalism

    The Centre for Media and Communication has been offering an M.A programme in Media and Communication since 2000. This new course in Mass Communication and Journalism offers a student who has passed his Intermediate (10 plus 2) examination an opportunity to acquire comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge required for a wide range of careers in the rapidly growing media field.

    Admission to this course is based on the entrance test which is usually held in the month of June.

  • B. Ed (ENGLISH) Programme (Self-Financing)

    Candidates are eligible to apply for the B. Ed. (English) programme if have you any one of the following qualifications:
    • BA in English with 50% marks
    • MA in English with 50% marks
    • BA in English (50% marks) doing MA English and awaiting final results.

B. Ed is recognized by NCTE; as per their norms, there are 6 theory papers, and also an internship for practice teaching.

Post Graduate Course

M.A in English

The two-year M.A programme in English, offers you to specialize in any one of the following five areas: English Literature, Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, Media and Communication, and Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL).

Specialized M.A, where you specialize in the area of your choice: M.A in Linguistics/ Media and Communication/Literary and Cultural Studies, etc.

Bracketed M.A, which is a combination of 1 and 2. For example: M.A in English (Media and Communication), M.A in English (TESL), etc. Your area of specialization will be written within brackets, hence the name ‘Bracketed M.A.’

Post Graduate Diploma Course

Post-Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PGDTE)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • if you are a teacher of English (primary, secondary or tertiary level) and wish to update your knowledge of recent trends in English Language Teaching


  • if you have an M. A. in the relevant subject* and wish to become a teacher of English

  • A person with an MA degree* in English/English Literature/ Linguistics/ TESL with at least 55% marks is eligible.

Admission is through an entrance test, which will examine your English language proficiency and aptitude for teaching English.
